Nouveau Butterfly Collection
This was a personal project I did for the SADA Marketplace event at my university. I used the Glowforge laser printer to cut and laser engrave clear acrylic. The design of the butterflies came from old graphics for a typography project I did a year ago. The curvy and flowing design style of the wings was inspired by the art nouveau movement from the early 1900s.
Not only did I really enjoy participating as a vendor in the marketplace event, but I am also very grateful that I had this experience. This was my first time making and selling something that I had made, and it made me very happy to see others appreciate the work I put into what I had made. I hope to participate in more art showcases like this one going forward.
The Butterfly Box
When brainstorming what I would present for the marketplace, I knew I wanted at least one big item as a centerpiece, and I thought what better way to showcase the design than a full butterfly box that lit up from the inside. While the idea was great, I do feel the execution needed a little more work. There were multiple problems with the adhesive of the acrylic, so I am actually glad that this item stayed just for show and was not sold.
Butterfly Jars and Stand Alone Butterfly
The bulk of this collection was the stand alone butterfly item and the butterfly jar item. The idea of a butterfly jar was my most clear vision at the start of brainstorming, but I never thought that it would get as much attention as my bigger, more detailed pieces. Turns out, I was very wrong. The butterfly jars were five times more successful than the stand alone butterflies during the marketplace event. Going forward, I believe I need to buy bigger jars and just put the stand alone butterflies in them instead of making two products.
