Vacation Bible School 2023
During the summer of 2023, I took on a leadership role in my church's Vacation Bible School event. Vacation Bible School, or VBS, is an outreach program for the youth of the church. I saw this as an excellent opportunity to put my design skills into action! For this week long event, I created a custom theme called "Around the World", where the kids would travel to different places around the world each day. It was challenging to create all the visuals and decorations we needed, but in the end I'm super proud of how it turned out!
Responsiblities
For this event I was tasked with being a co-director and the main decorator. As the decorator, I chose what graphics we could use and was in charge of creating graphic material like the backdrop. I used a mix of past props that the church had and my connections to a local print shop to print out materials we could use. I also worked in scheduling people, correndation volunteers, and making sure everything was done on time.

The Back Drop
The backdrop is the centerpiece of the Vacation Bible School visiual experience. It is the first graphic any parent or kids see when they first arrive and it is the semi-logo for all other aspects of the event. I chose a fun, simple illustration style to appeal to the kids. During this process, I learned a lot about how banners and other materials are printed by working with the local print shop. The environments featured on the backdrop show the different locations that the kids would "travel" to each day of VBS.
Typography
I knew I wanted a fun but bold typeface for this event, so I went with Bungee Shade Inline for the title and promotional material, Bungee Regular for other headlines, and Gin Oblique for part of the logo and body text used in promotional materials. Gin Oblique is a little overused, but I chose it because I knew it would be familar to the kids and parents alike and convey the correct message to them.
